It’s a feeling that every student has as they walk out of the test room and everyone talks about how it went. You can join in the talk because you believe it went reasonably well, or you avoid all mention of the recent calamity. If you ever feel this way, here are some suggestions about what to do when the test doesn’t go as planned.
Have a restful night’s sleep. Go to your room and let go of any bitter regrets. Prepare by reading an excellent book or watching a comedy. Then go to bed and sleep soundly. You can postpone all of your deliberations. You should feel rejuvenated when you get up, and you will be in a better frame of mind to think ahead. You can plan your next actions the next day. Therefore you may think critically and devise a plan of action.
- Do anything you enjoy, regardless of how little is it
Failure can cause dissatisfaction and the unshakeable sensation that you will be unhappy for the rest of your life. Remind yourself that these sensations are fleeting by engaging in things that make you happy – doing so emphasises the fact that life moves on and everything will be OK. Even a few minutes of sketching, planting, journaling, jogging, or singing along to your favourite music can help lift your spirits.
- Set goals
When you fail a test, you know it’s time to set some realistic goals. Consider where you are and how your results may have influenced your grades. Then plan, much ahead, to where you want to be. Do not leave any room for unfavourable outcomes. Make a plan for how you will improve and perform better on your next exam. This could include an agenda with good study methods and top exam-passing advice. You may need to create a timetable that clearly states when and what you will study. Your results may indicate that you need to roll up your sleeves and work even harder. It does not have to be arduous and exhausting. You will succeed if you plan where you need to go and how you will get there. Strive for excellence in your studies, and your efforts will be rewarded. You will gradually improve your talents in whichever subject you choose. You will be pleased with the results.
- Resist the temptation to worry about the test
As a college student, I am all too acquainted with the need to gather with my colleagues immediately following an exam and discuss every question. Fixating on what you believe you missed will not help you after the exam. Allow it to go. Concentrate on getting through the day rather than speculating on how terribly you failed or dwelling on every imaginable ramification of a poor exam grade.
- Learn about your alternatives
Inquire with your teacher about your next steps. You may be eligible to retake the exam or change the ‘poor’ mark in some cases. Alternatively, if you are having difficulty with school in general, contact your teacher for recommendations on how to improve. Your teacher will most likely be inspired by your commitment to succeed (working in a web design agency in Malaysia for example) and will be more than eager to assist you.
